Stages in Creation of IHEA's Publications
- Research: we use the interpretive method to go beyond the statistics, to truly understand the community's experience, expectations and need.
- Selection of the text for translation: adult education specialists are used to produce simplified English originals.
- Approval of the original text: scientists, health educators and focus groups decide on the quality of the text.
- Translation and modification: often mere translation is not sufficient; volunteers from within the community have to modify the text for sensitivity and appropriateness.
- Design and illustration: many immigrants prefer to learn through pictures and illustrations. Use of symbols and designs already familiar to the group creates enthusiasm for learning.
- Evaluation by focus groups and professionals: volunteers recruited from the community present the finished draft to lay persons. A separate evaluation is conducted by health professionals from within the community. The comments from both groups are also recorded and studied for to improve future publications.
- Post-publication survey: conducted after the distribution of the material to gauge its effectiveness.
